South Berkshire’s post-Christmas programme finally got underway on Saturday as all eleven teams returned to action following the previous weekend’s complete washout due to freezing conditions. With players and supporters alike eager for competitive hockey to resume, it proved to be a busy and largely positive restart across the club.
The Men’s 1st XI made the trip to bottom-of-the-table Fareham hoping to extend the momentum built before Christmas, having secured three successive victories. Any thoughts of an early breakthrough were quickly checked, however, as Fareham nearly stunned their visitors within seconds of the opening whistle. A defensive lapse presented the hosts with a clear opportunity, but Berkshire goalkeeper Cameron Mitchell reacted superbly to produce a vital save and settle early nerves.

Fareham continued to enjoy the better of the opening exchanges, pressing high and forcing Berkshire into errors as the visitors struggled to shake off some post-festive rustiness. The home side defended in numbers and made it difficult for Berkshire to find space in the final third. As the first half progressed, Berkshire gradually began to assert themselves, with wide players Connor Anderson and Chris Badger repeatedly testing the Fareham defence down the flanks. Despite creating several promising openings, Berkshire were unable to find a decisive touch, and the sides went into the interval goalless, with Fareham still posing a threat on the counter-attack.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart, and it was Fareham who struck first. Five minutes into the second half, a well-worked short corner caught the Berkshire defence out of shape, allowing Craig Peel the time and space to drive the ball low into the net and give the home side a deserved lead. The goal prompted an immediate response from Berkshire, who increased the tempo and pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser.
Fareham, however, remained disciplined and organised, frustrating Berkshire’s attempts to play through the middle and continuing to look dangerous when breaking forward. As the final quarter began, the hosts were still clinging to their narrow advantage. With time running out, Berkshire finally found the breakthrough in the 58th minute. A sharp, first-time pass from Sam Fox-Harvey split the defence and found Luke Kennedy inside the D. Kennedy showed excellent composure under pressure, turning his marker before firing a low shot past the Fareham goalkeeper to level the scores.
Berkshire pressed hard for a winner in the closing stages and created several chances, but a combination of resolute defending and missed opportunities meant the points were shared. The 1–1 draw keeps Berkshire fourth in the table and extended their unbeaten run, though there was a sense they could have taken more from the contest.
Back closer to home, the Men’s 2nd XI delivered a composed and effective performance to secure a 3–0 victory over Wallingford 1st XI. Berkshire took control early on, with Aaron Smith opening the scoring in the first half with a well-taken strike. As Wallingford pushed forward in search of an equaliser late in the game, Berkshire capitalised. Mike Powell converted from a short corner before Jack Baveystock added a third from close range to put the result beyond doubt and keep the side eighth in the league.
The standout fixture of the day at Cantley Park was the much-anticipated clash between the Men’s 3rd and 4th XIs, a fixture that once again delivered drama, goals and no shortage of competitive edge. Having won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, the 3rd XI made the perfect start when Des Sanders found the net inside three minutes. The 4th XI responded strongly, however, and Tom Scott turned the match on its head with two well-taken goals on 20 and 25 minutes to give his side the lead.
The momentum swung once more just before the break when Ryan Kaley struck to bring the scores level at 2–2 at half-time. The second half continued in the same vein, with the 4th XI edging back in front through a goal from Duncan Clarke. Yet again, the 3rd XI refused to lie down, and Sanders struck for the second time on 55 minutes to set up a tense final quarter with the scores locked at 3–3.
With both sides pushing for the decisive goal, it was the 4th XI who had the final say. Five minutes from full time, Mark Andrews found the back of the net to secure a thrilling 4–3 victory, earning not only three valuable points but also the all-important bragging rights in the clubhouse afterwards. Despite the defeat, the 3rd XI remain second in the table, although they now trail leaders Stoke Green by nine points. The 4th XI’s win moves them into fifth place, just six points behind their in-house rivals.
Elsewhere, the Men’s 5th XI endured a difficult afternoon away to league leaders Eastcote, suffering a 5–0 defeat that leaves them eighth in the standings. In contrast, the Men’s 6th XI enjoyed a highly productive trip to Sonning, producing an emphatic 4–0 victory. Ryan Pogson and Jack Hitchens both scored twice in a dominant display that lifts Berkshire into third place on goal difference, just two points behind league leaders Marlow.
The Ladies’ 1st XI travelled to Eastleigh to face Trojans in what proved to be another closely contested encounter between the two sides. Berkshire took the lead on 20 minutes when Alessia Osborne finished confidently, but the advantage was short-lived as Trojans’ Jessica Creagh equalised five minutes later. Neither side was able to find a winner, and the match ended 1–1, mirroring the result of the earlier meeting. The point leaves Berkshire tenth in the table, though with games in hand on several teams above them.
The Ladies’ 2nd XI continued their steady progress with a narrow but valuable 1–0 victory over Leighton Buzzard. Safeeyah Rashid scored early in the second half, and a disciplined defensive performance ensured Berkshire claimed their fourth win of the season and remained ninth in the division. The Ladies’ 3rd XI, however, found the going tough at home, as they were beaten 4–0 by a strong Sonning side and stay ninth.
The Ladies’ 4th XI picked up a point on the road at Reading. Kyna Will gave Berkshire an early lead after just five minutes, but a goal from Nelia Bekker midway through the first half brought the hosts level, and the match finished 1–1, keeping Berkshire fifth in the table. The Ladies’ 5th XI enjoyed a successful outing of their own, edging past Reading 1–0 thanks to a late first-half strike from Kim Owen, a result that moves them up one place to fifth.
Attention now turns quickly to the next round of fixtures, with a busy schedule ahead. The Ladies’ 4th XI are in midweek action on Tuesday evening when they host Yateley at Cantley Park. On Saturday, the Men’s 1st XI welcome Oxford University to Cantley Park, while the Men’s 2nd XI travel to face the same opposition. The Men’s 3rd XI are at home to Banbury, followed by the Men’s 6th XI against Eastcote later in the afternoon. Elsewhere, the Men’s 4th XI travel to Aylesbury and the Men’s 5th XI are away at Slough.
The Ladies’ programme sees the 4th XI open proceedings at Cantley Park against Staines, followed by the Ladies’ 1st XI hosting Wycombe. The Ladies’ 2nd XI travel to Abingdon, the 3rd XI head to Reading, and the 5th XI face Wycombe. The O60s are also on the road, with a trip to Camberley Owls.
Sunday brings cup action for both Mixed sides, with the A teamhosting Horsham at Cantley Park, while the B team travel to Woking, rounding off a full weekend of hockey for South Berkshire.
