Berks Young Guns Star in Trophy VictorySouth Berkshire produced one of their most impressive performances of the season on Saturday as they overcame West Open Division One leaders Caradon Hockey Club 5–3 at Cantley Park to progress to the quarter-finals of the England Hockey Trophy.
The second-round tie began in cautious fashion, with both sides taking time to settle. Berkshire, buoyed by three successive Premier Division league wins, gradually took control of possession, moving the ball sharply and showing composure across the pitch. Their early dominance was rewarded after 14 minutes when Connor Eatwell powered down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross into the D. The ball evaded Tom McLean and two Caradon defenders before falling kindly for Alex Cook, who was left unmarked in front of goal and made no mistake to give Berkshire a deserved 1–0 lead.
The home side continued to dictate the tempo, pinning Caradon deep in their own half for long periods. Chances followed, but the visitors’ defence held firm until Chris Badger was brought down in the D following a strong challenge. A penalty flick was awarded, and Sam Fox Harvey stepped forward, fresh from scoring his 100th league goal from the spot the previous week. With the crowd silent, Fox Harvey drove his effort to the right, only for Caradon goalkeeper Daniel Harris to guess correctly and produce an excellent save to deny Berkshire a second.
That miss proved costly moments later. On 20 minutes, Pat Diplock was dispossessed on the 23-yard line in the Berkshire half, allowing Caradon to counter quickly. A sharp pass released striker Ben Hedley, who turned past defender Tom King before smashing the ball beyond Cameron Mitchell to level the scores at 1–1.
Berkshire responded in the best possible fashion. Just three minutes later, young striker Connor Anderson restored the lead when he rifled home from a short corner, sending the ball high into the Caradon net for 2–1. The hosts continued to press, creating further opportunities, but were again guilty of failing to convert sustained pressure into goals.
Just before the interval, Chris Badger produced a moment of individual brilliance to give Berkshire breathing space. Collecting the ball at the top of the D, he skipped past two defenders, drove at goal, slid beyond another challenge and finished emphatically past both defender and goalkeeper to put Berkshire 3–1 ahead at half-time.
Caradon emerged for the second half with renewed intent and forced Berkshire onto the back foot. Goalkeeper Cameron Mitchell was called into action on several occasions, producing important saves to maintain the two-goal cushion. However, on 49 minutes Berkshire failed to fully clear a Caradon attack, and a strike from the top of the D by Harrison Pollard deflected off Ollie Bruce’s stick and trickled under a wrong-footed Mitchell to reduce the deficit to 3–2 and set up a tense final quarter.
With the visitors sensing an opportunity, Berkshire needed a response, and once again it came from Badger. On 60 minutes, he received a pinpoint pass from Luke Kennedy at the top of the D, evaded a sliding challenge and sold the goalkeeper with a clever dummy before calmly rounding him and finishing into the empty net to restore Berkshire’s two-goal advantage.
Five minutes later, the result was effectively sealed when Connor Anderson struck again from a short corner, blasting high into the net for his second goal of the afternoon and Berkshire’s fifth. Caradon did manage a late consolation when Tom Haigh turned in from close range after the ball rebounded off Mitchell, but Berkshire saw out the closing minutes to secure a deserved 5–3 victory.
South Berkshire will now face either Preston or Loughborough Town away on 14 February in the quarter-final of the competition.
Elsewhere at Cantley Park, Berkshire Men’s 4th XI delivered a dominant display to thrash Staines 9–1. Tom Scott was the standout performer, scoring five goals, while Mark Andrews added two and Duncan Clarke and Mike Jarvis completed the scoring.
The Ladies 1st XI rounded off the day with a local derby against Sonning. The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the match but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from Berkshire goalkeeper Natasha Childs. Berkshire struggled to find fluency in attack, missing injured striker Kelly Hancock, and the match ended goalless, with the home side grateful for a hard-earned point.
Away from home, Berkshire teams largely enjoyed a successful day. The Men’s 2nd XI recorded an excellent 2–1 win at Windsor, with goals from Joe Hayes and Sam Coombes. The Men’s 3rd XI were equally impressive, sweeping aside bottom-placed Henley 5–1, with Elliott Spencer and Gareth Menezes both scoring twice and Mike Longson adding a fifth.
The Ladies 5th XI produced a superb away performance to defeat Harlow High Wycombe 6–1, with goals shared between Bronte Charles, Elizabeth Linsky, Bev Lee, Helen Wilson, Rosie Edmunds and Clare Owen. The Ladies 2nd XI were less fortunate, narrowly losing 2–1 to Bicester despite a goal from Shelby Dell.
The Men’s O60s also enjoyed success on their travels, returning from Winchester with a convincing 4–0 victory thanks to a Ryan Pogson hat-trick and a strike from Roly Mears.
At the turn of the year, Berkshire’s league positions see the Men’s 1st XI in fourth place, the 2nd XI ninth, the 3rd XI second, the 4th XI fifth, the 5th XI eighth and the 6th XI third. The Ladies’ sides sit seventh for the 1st XI, ninth for the 2nd XI, seventh for the 3rd XI, and fifth for both the 4th and 5th XIs, while the O60s are currently 11th in their division.
The season resumes on 10 January, with the Ladies 1st XI hosting Aldershot & Farnham at Cantley Park at 11.45am, followed by the Men’s 1st XI against Amersham at 1.15pm. The Ladies 5th XI travel to Amersham, with a full programme of fixtures following the week after.
