South Berkshire enjoyed a weekend to remember as teams across the club delivered goals, grit and standout performances in a packed programme of league and cup action, highlighted by a landmark derby victory and a string of crucial results in promotion and survival battles.

Saturday morning at Cantley Park opened with the first of two RG derbies as the Men’s 2nd team took on a well-organised Reading side. The visitors’ polished passing game contrasted sharply with Berkshire’s direct, high-tempo approach, and the first half unfolded as a tense tactical battle with chances at a premium. Despite Berkshire’s energetic pressing and strong defensive work, the breakthrough came on the hour when familiar foe Huw Kimber converted a short corner high past goalkeeper David Baines. Berkshire pushed hard in the closing stages but could not find the decisive opening, eventually slipping to a narrow 1–0 defeat. The result kept Reading firmly in second place, while Berkshire were left frustrated at missing the chance to climb into the top half.
Momentum quickly swung back in Berkshire’s favour when the Ladies’ 2nd team produced a composed and determined display against Staines in a vital clash at the lower end of the table. A tight, goalless first half gave way to a moment of quality just after the break, as Safeeyah Rashid surged into the circle before finding Grace Gerrish. Although Gerrish’s initial effort was saved, Rashid reacted quickest to calmly tuck away the rebound and secure a priceless 1–0 victory. The win lifted Berkshire up to eighth and opened daylight between themselves and the relegation places.
The Men’s 4th team then lit up Cantley Park with a ruthless attacking performance against Banbury. Any notion of a repeat of Banbury’s draw with the Men’s 3rds the previous week was swiftly dispelled as captain Mike Bayliss smashed home a powerful opener inside seven minutes. The lead was doubled and then trebled before half-time thanks to two clinical finishes from the club’s leading goalscorer, Tom Scott sending Berkshire into the break with a commanding 3–0 advantage. Banbury briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half with a goal, but a classic poacher’s goal from Duncan Clarke and a fine strike from Chris Priddle sealed an emphatic 5–1 win. With the Men’s 3rds suffering a 5-0 defeat at Buckingham , the result lifted the 4ths up to fourth place, just four points off the top three, just below the Men’s 3rd team in third.
There was a stern test for the Ladies’ 3rd team against dominant league leaders Newbury, who showed their quality in a 5–0 victory that extended their lead at the summit to nine points. Berkshire battled throughout but ultimately remain ninth in a highly competitive division.
Another highlight came from the Ladies’ 5th team, who delivered an assured performance in a top-four clash against Scarlet Runners. Lauren Cardy proved decisive, striking once in each half to secure a deserved 2–0 win. The result keeps Berkshire fourth, just two points off third place with a game still in hand, firmly in the promotion conversation.
Away from Cantley Park, the Men’s 6th team continued their impressive campaign with a commanding 5–1 win over bottom-placed Yateley at Birch Hill. Jack Hitchens set the tone with two first-half goals before Ryan Pogson, James Gibbs and Michael Bowyer added further gloss after the break. The victory keeps Berkshire third in the table, just two points behind leaders Marlow and very much in the title hunt.
The Men’s 5th team earned a morale-boosting first away point of the season with a hard-fought 1–1 draw at Maidenhead. Percy Cahill marked his breakthrough moment for the club with his first goal, a result that offers encouragement despite Berkshire remaining rooted to the foot of the table.
The Ladies’ 1st team endured another narrow setback on the road at Marlow. Eleanor Dennison gave Berkshire the perfect start with an early goal, but the hosts responded to claim a 2–1 win. The defeat leaves Berkshire in 12th place, just two points clear of the bottom, as they look to halt a challenging run of form. The Ladies’ 4th team were involved in a thrilling contest at Maidenhead but were edged out 3–2, with goals from Mia Pinder and Natalie Douthwaite proving just short of securing a result, dropping Berkshire to sixth.
The performance of the weekend, however, belonged to the Men’s 1st team, who produced a scintillating display under the floodlights to claim their first ever league win away at Reading. After a dominant opening quarter, the breakthrough arrived on 16 minutes when Sam Fox Harvey found Connor Anderson on the edge of the circle, his clever first-time flick setting up Josh Cowell to finish clinically. Cowell doubled the lead ten minutes later with a thunderous short-corner strike, putting Berkshire firmly in control. Despite green cards to Anderson and Josh Chapman , disrupting the rhythm before the break, Berkshire resumed with renewed authority in the second half. Cowell completed a superb hat-trick on 42 minutes with another short-corner effort that crept over the goalkeeper, before Luke Kennedy reacted quickest to a rebound from a Connor Eatwell strike to make it four. Just 40 seconds later, Marcus Longfield burst into the circle to smash home a fifth, leaving Reading reeling. A late short-corner consolation denied Berkshire a clean sheet, but the 5–1 victory was a historic and emphatic statement that extended their unbeaten run to six games and kept them fourth in the Premier
Division.
Sunday provided yet more cause for celebration as the Ladies’ Over 55s powered their way into the quarter-finals of the O55s Trophy with a dominant 6–0 win over Amersham. Sandra Dodington led the charge with two goals, while Rachel Mann, Jane Clarke, Clare Maidlow and Liz Gemmell all added their names to the scoresheet in a superb all-round team performance.
Attention now turns to another pivotal weekend, with Cantley Park set to host a full day of action. The Men’s 5th team get proceedings underway as they look for a vital victory against third-placed Yateley in their bid to pull clear of the bottom. The Men’s 3rds follow with an important clash against Amersham, before the Ladies’ 1sts take to the pitch in the afternoon for a crucial encounter with bottom side New Forest. The day concludes with a stern test for the Ladies’ 4ths, who welcome league leaders Marlow in the final match of the day.
The Men’s 1st team face a huge double-header as they look to maintain their momentum at the top end of the Premier Division, hosting second-placed Staines on Saturday afternoon before returning to Cantley Park on Sunday to take on fifth-placed Amersham. Elsewhere, the Men’s 2nds travel to Yateley with the chance to break into the top half, while the Men’s 4ths face a tough away test against runaway leaders Stoke Green. The Men’s 6ths head to second-placed Windsor knowing a win, coupled with a slip from Marlow, could see them finish the weekend top of the table. The Men’s Over 60s travel to Salisbury looking to climb away from the bottom five with a positive result.
On the women’s side, the Ladies’ 2nds make the trip to Oxford aiming to build on their recent momentum, the Ladies’ 3rds travel across town to Phoenix Reading with seventh place in sight, and the Ladies’ 5ths head to Windsor looking to continue their push up the table.
With key fixtures across every section of the club, another action-packed weekend awaits as South Berkshire look to keep their impressive season rolling.
