Five Guys has officially opened its new restaurant and drive-thru at the Showcase Cinema complex in Winnersh, an area well known locally as a flooding hotspot.

The popular American burger chain welcomed its first customers on Monday 26 January, moving into a newly built unit designed with a dedicated flood protection system to prevent water damage during severe weather.

New Five Guys with build in flood defences

Speaking to My Wokingham on opening day, a Five Guys manager explained that flood resilience was built into the design from the start.

“People don’t need to worry about flooding here. This is a brand-new building with its own flood defence system underneath the restaurant and drive-thru.”

The system includes large underground tanks designed to capture and manage floodwater, allowing it to safely recede without entering the building.

Although the structure appears at ground level, it has effectively been built above potential flood height, ensuring the restaurant remains protected even if surrounding parts of the Showcase Cinema area are affected.

26th January Opening Day

The restaurant was busy on its first day, with staff welcoming new customers and handing out free peanuts, a familiar feature at Five Guys locations.

“We’re excited to welcome our new customers and hope they enjoy our food and the pleasant surroundings of the new Five Guys here at the Showcase Cinema,” the manager added.
