Berkshire Bounce Back as Season Enters Crucial Phase

With Cantley Park partially occupied ahead of the weekend’s Half Marathon, it was a reduced but fiercely competitive programme for South Berkshire Hockey Club. Across league and cup competitions, there were statement performances, crucial wins and defining moments as the season moves into its decisive phase.

The Men’s 2nd XI opened the weekend against Windsor knowing three points would elevate them into fifth and tighten the mid-table standings. Berkshire began with authority, dominating early possession and pressing intelligently through midfield channels. Their reward arrived on 15 minutes when Robbie Grant reacted sharply inside the circle to fire home and give the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead. Defensively compact and organised, Berkshire carried that advantage into halftime looking in control.

The second half, however, swung dramatically. Windsor capitalised on a brief defensive lapse as Andrew McIlwraith levelled before Tom Ive struck minutes later to complete a swift turnaround. Berkshire pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but despite late pressure they were unable to breach the Windsor defence, falling to a 2–1 defeat that leaves them seventh.

The Ladies’ 2nd XI followed against promotion-chasing Bicester aiming to extend their unbeaten run. Berkshire matched their high-flying opponents stride for stride in a competitive opening half and deservedly took the lead on 25 minutes when Bianca Chalk finished confidently after a well-worked move. The defensive unit held firm to preserve the advantage through to halftime.

After the restart, Bicester demonstrated their cutting edge. Two goals inside five minutes shifted the balance before a third extended their lead. Emile Knights-Toomer proved decisive, completing her hat-trick on the hour mark to seal a 4–1 victory. Berkshire remain eighth, with five crucial fixtures remaining to secure league safety.

The Ladies’ 3rd XI produced one of the day’s most disciplined performances against Windsor. Clare Plant opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a composed finish following sustained attacking pressure. Just before halftime, Safeeyah Rashid doubled the lead with her sixth goal of the season, giving Berkshire a strong platform. Windsor responded through Isla Fenwick midway through the second half, setting up a tense final quarter, but Berkshire’s defensive resilience ensured a hard-earned 2–1 victory. They remain seventh but firmly within reach of a top-four finish.

At Birch Hill, the Men’s 3rd XI kept their promotion ambitions firmly alive with a commanding 4–1 win over Henley. Exploding out of the blocks, Berkshire struck twice inside the opening fifteen minutes through Richie Wallace and Gareth Menezes to seize early control. Henley reduced the deficit before halftime via Gordon Merritt, but Berkshire responded emphatically after the break. Mike Longson netted his seventh of the campaign to restore the two-goal cushion, and Wallace added his second to complete a comprehensive victory. Berkshire sit third, just one point behind Buckingham and chasing leaders Stoke Green with five games remaining.

The Ladies’ 5th XI faced Harlow High Wycombe knowing victory would lift them into third. The contest was competitive and evenly matched for long spells, but Harlow’s clinical finishing proved decisive. Heather Scutchings delivered a ruthless hat-trick to secure a 3–0 result. Berkshire remain fifth and, with six matches to play, still have the opportunity to mount a strong run toward the promotion places.

On the road, the Men’s 1st XI produced a high-calibre response to arrest a three-game losing run. Travelling to Amersham in cold, blustery conditions, Berkshire started with intensity. Pat Diplock converted a slick short corner routine inside four minutes before Tom McLean opened his account for the club after superb work from Josh Cowell, who surged from halfway before delivering a precise ball across the circle for a simple finish. Two goals inside twelve minutes stunned the hosts.

The match settled into a physical midfield contest, with goalkeeper Cameron Mitchell outstanding between the posts. Amersham increased pressure after halftime and pulled a goal back on 60 minutes, but Berkshire responded decisively. Connor Eatwell’s cross found McLean, who unselfishly squared for Chris Badger to finish and restore the two-goal cushion. Further heroics from Mitchell preserved a 3–1 victory that lifts Berkshire into fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Amersham and keeping alive hopes of a best-ever fourth-place finish.

The Men’s 4th XI demonstrated resilience in a hard-fought 3–2 win at Staines. Tom Scott and Duncan Clarke kept Berkshire in contention before skipper Mike “Gladys” Baylis struck late to secure all three points. They remain fifth, though promotion may be beyond reach.

The Ladies’ 1st XI endured a difficult afternoon away at Sonning, falling to a 3–0 defeat that drops them to ninth and firmly into a relegation battle with six games remaining.

The Ladies’ 4th XI, by contrast, delivered a composed 2–0 victory away at Yateley. Bronte Charles opened the scoring before Ellie Smith added a second-half goal to secure the points. Berkshire remain third, ten points behind second-placed Henley, but continue to apply pressure near the top of the table.

Adding to the weekend’s successes, the Men’s O60s produced a superb performance on the road at Haslemere. Demonstrating experience, composure and clinical finishing, Berkshire secured an impressive victory thanks to a hat-trick from Ryan Pogson, a brace from Roly Mear and a further strike from Andrew Gelder. The result underlines the strength and depth across all age groups within the club.

Pivotal Fixtures Ahead

Next weekend presents another defining chapter across multiple divisions.

The Men’s 1st XI face a demanding trip to third-placed Bournemouth, a match that could significantly influence the race for the top four. A positive result would further cement Berkshire’s credentials in the closing stages.

The Men’s 2nd XI host Newbury at Cantley Park in the 10:15 pushback, determined to respond and re-enter the hunt for fifth. In Division 4 North, the Men’s 3rd XI travel to Eastcote knowing maximum points are essential to maintain pressure on Buckingham and Stoke Green in the promotion race.

The Men’s 4th XI welcome second-placed Buckingham at 11:45 in a fixture that could directly impact the title and promotion picture, while the Men’s 5th XI travel to bottom side Wycombe in a critical relegation six-pointer.

At Birch Hill, the Men’s 6th XI aim to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches as they host Staines in the early 10:00 start. The Men’s Veterans, currently seventh, face fourth-placed Epsom at 11:45, targeting a win that could lift them into the top five.

In the women’s section, the Ladies’ 1st XI travel to Chichester urgently seeking points to climb away from danger. The Ladies’ 2nd XI host Wootton Wanderers at 13:15 in a key fixture to steady their campaign.

The Ladies’ 3rd XI travel to Newbury in a tight mid-table clash that could see them rise as high as fifth. The Ladies’ 4th XI entertain Amersham at 16:30, aiming to reduce the gap to the top two. Meanwhile, the Ladies’ 5th XI host second-bottom Yateley at 15:00, knowing that victory would consolidate their position and potentially reignite their promotion ambitions.

On Sunday, South Berkshire’s Mixed A side host Oxford Hawks in the England Hockey Cup with a quarter-final berth at stake. With league positions tightening and promotion and survival battles intensifying, South Berkshire head into another crucial weekend brimming with confidence and belief.

All Sports Wokingham

All Sports Wokingham was founded by local photographer and publisher Paul King, who brings more than 40 years’ experience in local news, publishing and photography. Recognising a clear gap in the market for an independent sports publication dedicated solely to local and community sport, Paul set out to create a platform that would celebrate athletes, teams and clubs across Wokingham Borough and the surrounding areas. The All Sports Wokingham website launched in October 2024, providing regular online coverage of local sport. Building on its early success, the publication expanded into print, with the first magazine print run taking place in April 2025. The high-quality, photo-led magazine was warmly received and has continued to grow in popularity since its launch. Today, All Sports Wokingham showcases a wide range of sports, telling the stories of local clubs and competitors while supporting grassroots sport and the wider community.
