Berkshire Bounce Back as Season Enters Crucial Phase
With Cantley Park partially occupied ahead of the weekend’s Half Marathon, it was a reduced but fiercely competitive programme for South Berkshire Hockey Club. Across league and cup competitions, there were statement performances, crucial wins and defining moments as the season moves into its decisive phase.
The Men’s 2nd XI opened the weekend against Windsor knowing three points would elevate them into fifth and tighten the mid-table standings. Berkshire began with authority, dominating early possession and pressing intelligently through midfield channels. Their reward arrived on 15 minutes when Robbie Grant reacted sharply inside the circle to fire home and give the hosts a deserved 1–0 lead. Defensively compact and organised, Berkshire carried that advantage into halftime looking in control.

The second half, however, swung dramatically. Windsor capitalised on a brief defensive lapse as Andrew McIlwraith levelled before Tom Ive struck minutes later to complete a swift turnaround. Berkshire pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but despite late pressure they were unable to breach the Windsor defence, falling to a 2–1 defeat that leaves them seventh.
The Ladies’ 2nd XI followed against promotion-chasing Bicester aiming to extend their unbeaten run. Berkshire matched their high-flying opponents stride for stride in a competitive opening half and deservedly took the lead on 25 minutes when Bianca Chalk finished confidently after a well-worked move. The defensive unit held firm to preserve the advantage through to halftime.
After the restart, Bicester demonstrated their cutting edge. Two goals inside five minutes shifted the balance before a third extended their lead. Emile Knights-Toomer proved decisive, completing her hat-trick on the hour mark to seal a 4–1 victory. Berkshire remain eighth, with five crucial fixtures remaining to secure league safety.
The Ladies’ 3rd XI produced one of the day’s most disciplined performances against Windsor. Clare Plant opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a composed finish following sustained attacking pressure. Just before halftime, Safeeyah Rashid doubled the lead with her sixth goal of the season, giving Berkshire a strong platform. Windsor responded through Isla Fenwick midway through the second half, setting up a tense final quarter, but Berkshire’s defensive resilience ensured a hard-earned 2–1 victory. They remain seventh but firmly within reach of a top-four finish.
At Birch Hill, the Men’s 3rd XI kept their promotion ambitions firmly alive with a commanding 4–1 win over Henley. Exploding out of the blocks, Berkshire struck twice inside the opening fifteen minutes through Richie Wallace and Gareth Menezes to seize early control. Henley reduced the deficit before halftime via Gordon Merritt, but Berkshire responded emphatically after the break. Mike Longson netted his seventh of the campaign to restore the two-goal cushion, and
Wallace added his second to complete a comprehensive victory. Berkshire sit third, just one point behind Buckingham and chasing leaders Stoke Green with five games remaining.
The Ladies’ 5th XI faced Harlow High Wycombe knowing victory would lift them into third. The contest was competitive and evenly matched for long spells, but Harlow’s clinical finishing proved decisive. Heather Scutchings delivered a ruthless hat-trick to secure a 3–0 result. Berkshire remain fifth and, with six matches to play, still have the opportunity to mount a strong run toward the promotion places.
On the road, the Men’s 1st XI produced a high-calibre response to arrest a three-game losing run. Travelling to Amersham in cold, blustery conditions, Berkshire started with intensity. Pat Diplock converted a slick short corner routine inside four minutes before Tom McLean opened his account for the club after superb work from Josh Cowell, who surged from halfway before delivering a precise ball across the circle for a simple finish. Two goals inside twelve minutes stunned the hosts.
The match settled into a physical midfield contest, with goalkeeper Cameron Mitchell outstanding between the posts. Amersham increased pressure after halftime and pulled a goal back on 60 minutes, but Berkshire responded decisively. Connor Eatwell’s cross found McLean, who unselfishly squared for Chris Badger to finish and restore the two-goal cushion. Further heroics from Mitchell preserved a 3–1 victory that lifts Berkshire into fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Amersham and keeping alive hopes of a best-ever fourth-place finish.
The Men’s 4th XI demonstrated resilience in a hard-fought 3–2 win at Staines. Tom Scott and Duncan Clarke kept Berkshire in contention before skipper Mike “Gladys” Baylis struck late to secure all three points. They remain fifth, though promotion may be beyond reach.
The Ladies’ 1st XI endured a difficult afternoon away at Sonning, falling to a 3–0 defeat that drops them to ninth and firmly into a relegation battle with six games remaining.
The Ladies’ 4th XI, by contrast, delivered a composed 2–0 victory away at Yateley. Bronte Charles opened the scoring before Ellie Smith added a second-half goal to secure the points. Berkshire remain third, ten points behind second-placed Henley, but continue to apply pressure near the top of the table.

Adding to the weekend’s successes, the Men’s O60s produced a superb performance on the road at Haslemere. Demonstrating experience, composure and clinical finishing, Berkshire secured an impressive victory thanks to a hat-trick from Ryan Pogson, a brace from Roly Mear and a further strike from Andrew Gelder. The result underlines the strength and depth across all age groups within the club.
