Berkshire Ladies Roar as Goals, Grit and Drama Define the Weekend
South Berkshire’s Ladies section delivered a weekend of authority, precision and resilience, emerging unbeaten with four wins and a draw in a sequence of performances that combined tactical discipline with clinical finishing. Across Cantley Park and beyond, the tone was set early and sustained throughout.
The Ladies 1st XI entered their clash with bottom side New Forest under real pressure. Two consecutive defeats had dragged them into the lower reaches of the table, and the visit of the side directly beneath them carried the unmistakable edge of a relegation six-pointer. From the pushback it was tense, both teams pressing aggressively in midfield, closing down passing lanes and forcing turnovers rather than taking risks in possession.
Berkshire began to find fluency midway through the first half, working the ball through the inside channels and earning territory through sustained phases around the 25. The breakthrough on 20 minutes was a product of individual quality layered onto team structure. Mikaela Anderson-Watters received the ball with her back to goal, rolled her marker, accelerated between two defenders and drove into the circle before releasing a low, powerful strike beyond the goalkeeper’s right pad. The finish was decisive and gave Berkshire a deserved half-time lead.

The second half opened with New Forest committing numbers forward. Their equaliser on 58 minutes came from pressure in the circle, Lia Harper reacting first to a loose ball and striking emphatically from close range. For a brief period Berkshire were stretched, but their response was immediate and tactically sharp. Winning a penalty corner two minutes later, they executed cleanly. The injection was accurate, the trap secure, and Bethan Thomas drove through the ball with conviction, her strike cutting through traffic and finding the backboard. The final stages demanded composure under aerial pressure and repeat entries into the circle, but Berkshire’s defensive unit held shape and saw out a critical 2–1 victory. The result lifts them to ninth, though the contest was overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Natalie Lloyd, who was carried off after a lengthy stoppage.
The Ladies 2nd XI produced a controlled and mature away performance at Oxford. Berkshire established early territorial dominance by pressing high and recycling possession through the back line to stretch Oxford laterally. Grace Gerrish opened the scoring after sustained pressure, timing her run into the circle to receive a square pass before finishing cleanly across goal. The second came from structured build-up play, Shelby Dell receiving on the reverse in the D and striking low beyond the keeper. Defensively Berkshire were compact, limiting Oxford to half-chances from wide angles. The 2–0 win extends their unbeaten run to four matches and reinforces their mid-table security with six games remaining.
There was edge and intensity in the Ladies 3rd XI’s derby encounter at Phoenix Reading. Berkshire started assertively, using early transfers to bypass midfield pressure. Ellie Pollitt broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, capitalising on a rebound inside the circle for her third of the season. The visitors controlled much of the first half through disciplined structure and intelligent use of the right flank. Shortly after the restart, Ilsa Clarke doubled the lead with a well-taken finish after sharp interplay at the top of the D. Phoenix responded late, forcing repeated entries and pulling one back in the final minute through Tracy Castle, but Berkshire’s defensive organisation held through the closing exchanges to secure a hard-earned 2–1 victory that moves them into eighth place.
The Ladies 5th XI continued their strong run at Windsor, though were ultimately denied a full reward. Lauren Cardy gave Berkshire the lead with an early strike, her fifth goal of the campaign, after intercepting a loose clearance and finishing decisively. Berkshire defended in compact lines and limited Windsor’s circle entries for much of the match, but sustained late pressure eventually produced an equaliser around the hour mark. The 1–1 draw extends their unbeaten sequence to six matches and keeps them fourth with eight fixtures still to play.

On the Men’s side, the 1st XI faced 2nd placed Staines in a match defined by sharp transitions and clinical finishing. Berkshire began positively, creating opportunities through wide overloads and early balls into the circle, but Staines were ruthless. Alex Betts struck twice in the first half, capitalising on defensive lapses to give the visitors a 2–0 interval lead. When Tom Woods extended the advantage early in the second half, Berkshire were forced to chase the contest.
A tactical adjustment to higher pressing and quicker ball release yielded dividends. Connor Anderson converted a short corner with a looping effort that dipped under the bar, reigniting momentum. Soon after, Marcus Longfield dispossessed a defender inside the 25, drove into the circle, rounded the goalkeeper and saw his shot deflect in off a recovering defender. The closing stages were played almost entirely in the Staines half, but despite repeated entries and pressure from penalty corners, Berkshire could not force an equaliser and remained fourth in the standings.
The Men’s 2nd XI delivered a commanding display against Yateley, asserting control from the outset through aggressive pressing and rapid transitions. Rob Grant opened the scoring with a composed finish before Jack Baveystock and Neil Bennett extended the lead prior to half-time. Baveystock added his second early in the second period, finishing clinically after a quick turnover. Yateley pulled one back, but skipper Mike Powell restored the margin to seal a convincing 5–1 victory that keeps Berkshire seventh and within reach of the teams above.
The Men’s 3rd XI were involved in a high-tempo 4–3 encounter that swung repeatedly. After falling behind to Chris Everitt, Berkshire responded immediately through Mike Longson, who struck firmly from the top of the circle. Ewan Bull’s deflected effort gave Berkshire the lead early in the second half, but Warren Scott levelled soon after. Richie Wallace restored the advantage with a close-range finish before Scott again drew the visitors level. Bull’s second goal on the hour, arriving from a sharp attacking phase in the circle, ultimately proved decisive and keeps Berkshire third, just a point behind Buckingham.

The 4th XI travelled to unbeaten leaders Stoke Green and matched them for long periods. Tom Scott and David Morgan both found the net in a competitive contest, but Stoke Green edged the encounter 3–2. The narrow defeat sees Berkshire slip to fifth, though the performance demonstrated their capacity to challenge the division’s strongest side.
The 5th XI endured a difficult afternoon in a 5–3 loss to Yateley. David Badger opened the scoring early with sharp control and finish, but Yateley responded through Kevin Manning. Badger’s second brought parity once more, and Ethan Tran produced a standout individual goal to keep Berkshire in contention. However, defensive lapses in the latter stages allowed Yateley to pull away, leaving Berkshire second bottom with four matches remaining.
The standout result came from the Men’s 6th XI in a top-of-the-table clash with Windsor. After James Gibbs opened the scoring on 20 minutes, the second half became a showcase for Ryan Pogson. His five goals, arriving through a combination of sharp movement and clinical finishing, dismantled the visitors’ defensive structure. Michael Bowyer also added to the tally in a dominant 7–0 victory that lifts Berkshire into second place, just two points behind leaders Marlow with four games remaining and promotion firmly in contention.
Sunday saw the Men’s 1st XI return to action against Amersham in a rearranged fixture. Despite dominating the first quarter through controlled possession and repeated circle entries, Berkshire were punished when Zaim Rana converted on 20 minutes. Pat Diplock levelled shortly after, reacting quickest to a loose ball in the circle. Josh Cowell’s 13th goal of the season put Berkshire ahead midway through the second half, but Max Swierkosz equalised before a penalty flick, awarded after a foul by Sam Fox-Harvey, was dispatched by Tom Kavanagh. Berkshire were unable to recover and slipped to a 3–2 defeat, dropping to fifth with six matches remaining.
