About My Wokingham

My Wokingham was born from a simple but powerful idea: to celebrate the life, people, and spirit of the Borough of Wokingham. Founded by Nick Marr, a long-time resident with a passion for community, the platform was created to shine a spotlight on the stories that matter most — from local charities and schools to events, celebrations, and everything in between.

Nick’s journey to launching My Wokingham grew from his love of the borough and a desire to champion the work of local organisations and community groups. What started as a free monthly newspaper — the My Wokingham newspaper — faced early challenges in being financially viable as a print-only venture. But the heart of the project endured. What could have ended there instead evolved into a thriving local news and community events platform, now followed by thousands of residents across Wokingham and beyond.

Today, My Wokingham combines a digital news hub and free monthly newspaper with active social channels to bring you the stories that make our borough unique. We feature:

  • Positive community news and local events coverage, from school fetes to charity fundraisers.

  • Profiles and highlights of local charities and organisations.

  • Business features and support to help small, independent, and charitable enterprises grow.

  • Celebrations of everyday achievements — from fundraisers to performances. (Facebook)

One of the platform’s proudest moments has been Wokingham Has Got Talent, a community showcase that brought local performers together and raised thousands of pounds for local charities — even earning coverage on ITV news for its joyful impact. (Facebook)

Nick’s background is rooted in digital media and local business. Before starting My Wokingham, he built and led a range of online ventures, including becoming known as the UK’s first online estate agent, with features in national media including the Financial Times and BBC. His experience blends entrepreneurial spirit with a deep appreciation for the place he calls home.

At My Wokingham, Nick and the team are often out in the borough — talking to residents, reporting from events, and promoting everything from school fairs and live shows to community projects and important local announcements. They believe community journalism should be positive, inclusive, and reflective of the people who make Wokingham such a special place to live. (mywokingham.co.uk)
