Wokingham Conservatives have launched an online petition calling for urgent action to tackle growing parking pressures at Twyford railway station — a key commuting hub for residents across Wokingham Borough.
The petition, available at https://wokinghamconservatives.org.uk/TwyfordStationParking, highlights concerns that the station’s car park — which offers around 400 spaces — is usually full by 7.15am on weekdays. Campaigners say this leaves commuters struggling to find alternative parking and, in some cases, missing their trains.
Twyford Station is served by Great Western Railway, offering fast services to London Paddington as well as convenient connections to the Elizabeth Line. Local Conservatives describe the station as a “vital lifeline” for work, education and leisure travel — but argue that parking capacity has failed to keep pace with demand.
The group claims there is currently no clear plan from either Wokingham Borough Council or Great Western Railway (GWR) to increase provision. They have also expressed concern about proposals to introduce additional yellow lines on roads near the station, warning that these could further restrict commuter parking.
Through the petition, they are calling on the Borough Council to:
-
Work with GWR to assess both current and future parking demand
-
Explore options to expand parking near the station
-
Speed up decision-making rather than relying on “medium-term” planning
-
Improve public transport and cycling links to the station
Local residents who rely on Twyford Station for commuting are being encouraged to share their views by signing the petition online at:

I do not understand the logic in trying to bring pressure on the Council over this matter – legislation clearly puts Railway matters between railway companies and parliament.
However, should the council decide to push for additional infrastructure this might change.
Options – Twyford Garden Village – housing scheme, would in theory delivery a new additional station, plus 2,500 homes east of Twyford – which is likely once Labour’s increase housing targets have to be achieved.
Another Option – would be to develop a Reading East; Thames Valley Business Park or even a Woodley Station – I would suggest the location at the end of the A329 where the old Park and Ride site was located. – This would save residents from travelling into Reading or Twyford – it would allow people access to the Elizabeth Line. (Please remember the western Heathrow link is coming). People could either jump on a train into Reading and fast train to Paddington or travel to Twyford for a semi-fast service.
Ticketing could allow for both options.
