Parents across Wokingham may soon benefit from stronger parental leave rights, following new UK government reforms designed to give families greater security at some of life’s most challenging moments.

The changes come after years of campaigning by families affected by gaps in employment law, including bereaved parents who previously faced impossible choices between work and caring for a new child.

What’s Changing?

The UK Government has confirmed a package of reforms that will strengthen parental leave rights for millions of working families.

These include:

  • Improved leave rights for bereaved partners, allowing them time away from work to care for their child following the death of a partner
  • Greater employment protection for parents returning to work
  • More flexibility and security around parental leave entitlements

A recent Guardian article highlighted the story of a father who lost his partner during childbirth and was forced back to work far earlier than he felt able. His experience helped bring about reforms that will now allow bereaved partners to take up to 52 weeks of leave, offering crucial time to grieve and bond with their child.

  • Seek local support if they are struggling emotionally or financially
