With 2026 just around the corner, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is urging residents across the county to enjoy their New Year’s Eve celebrations safely.
However you are planning to celebrate, be it a party or a fireworks display, there are some small steps that you can take to make sure you begin the New Year Safely.
Paul Scott, Prevention Manager for RBFRS, says: “We know that a lot of people are going to be using fireworks to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Therefore, we want to make sure that you keep yourselves, your friends your families safe by using fireworks responsibly.
“We’d always recommend going to a community fireworks display rather than having one at home. However, if you do plan to use fireworks at home, make sure you stay well back when they’ve been lit, supervise young children and pets, and always keep a source of water nearby.
“If you’re heading out to celebrate and plan to have drink, make sure you don’t get behind the wheel. Get a lift from a designated driver, book a taxi, or use public transport to ensure that everyone get home safely.”

Celebrating Safely With Fireworks
- Only buy fireworks with a UKCA or CE mark from reputable retailers.
- Don’t set off fireworks when under the influence of alcohol.
- Never go near a firework that has been lit – even if it has gone off, it could still explode.
- Keep fireworks stored in a closed box when not in use and follow the instructions on each firework when you get them out.
- Never put fireworks in pockets or throw them.
- When lighting fireworks, always use a taper at arm’s length and stand well back.
- Always supervise children around fireworks and never give sparklers to children under the age of five.
- Be considerate to your neighbours and pets when letting off fireworks – let neighbours know in advance if you’re having a display at home.
- Ensure firework displays are over by 1am; this is the cut-off time by law
- Once the firework debris has cooled down, tidy it up and soak in water overnight before putting it in a rubbish bag in the bin.
It’s Not Worth the Risk:
- Never drink and drive. If you are out drinking, remove the question of driving from the equation. It’s not worth the risk. Book a taxi, catch the bus or train, or get a lift from a designated driver.
- Be aware that there may be reduced public transport during New Year’s Eve so plan ahead.
Water Safety:
- If you’re walking back after going out to celebrate, make sure you stay a safe distance away from the water edge – riverbanks can be slippery, especially after heavy rain or when the temperatures drop to freezing.
- If you do fall into the water, remember to float to live. Try not to panic, float on your back and wait until the effects of cold water shock pass. When the cold water shock has passed, swim to the edge or call for help.
- If someone else falls into the water, do not enter the water after them. Call 999 straight away, and ask to speak to the fire service. If there are life rings or throw lines where you are, use them.
