Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested by UK police as part of an ongoing investigation connected to allegations emerging from newly examined Jeffrey Epstein files.
The arrest marks one of the most significant developments involving a senior member of the British royal family in modern history.
Arrest confirmed by police
Thames Valley Police confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Officers also carried out searches at addresses in both Norfolk and Berkshire as part of the investigation.
According to reports, police vehicles arrived at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate shortly after 8am, where Mountbatten-Windsor has recently been staying.
The arrest coincided with his 66th birthday.
Authorities said the investigation is being conducted alongside multiple police forces and the National Crime Agency, reflecting the scale and sensitivity of the case.
Allegations linked to Epstein investigation
The inquiry follows renewed scrutiny after the release of documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Investigators are examining claims that Mountbatten-Windsor may have shared confidential government information during his time as the UK’s special trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.
Separate allegations under review include claims that Epstein arranged for a woman to travel to the UK for an encounter with Andrew — accusations he has consistently denied.
Police have not disclosed specific details of the evidence underlying the arrest, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said updates would be provided “at the appropriate time” due to intense public interest.

The breaking development was announced live on Sky News, capturing the moment broadcasters confirmed the arrest during rolling coverage of the investigation.
Moment Sky News announces Andrew arrest
Sky News reported that police had been assessing claims tied to material emerging from Epstein-related files before deciding to take action.
Political reaction
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the case demonstrated that “nobody is above the law,” while declining to comment on the ongoing investigation in detail.
Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment, though the Royal Family has previously distanced itself from Andrew following earlier controversies connected to Epstein.
Mountbatten-Windsor stepped back from royal duties in 2019 amid mounting criticism over his relationship with Epstein and was later stripped of military titles and royal patronages.
Investigation continues
Police confirmed Mountbatten-Windsor remains in custody while enquiries continue. The arrest forms part of a wider review involving several UK forces examining material linked to Epstein and associated allegations.
Officials have emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing and that no charges have yet been brought.
