Residents have raised concerns about road safety at a busy Finchampstead junction after several recent collisions were reportedly linked to the removal of a historic war memorial.
The junction — where Rectory Hill meets The Ridges and Jubilee Road — was once widely known locally as “War Memorial Junction.” The memorial was relocated in recent years following safety concerns and discussions about redesigning the crossroads.
However, villagers now claim accidents have increased since the landmark was moved, arguing the memorial previously acted as a visual reminder for drivers to slow down when approaching the intersection.

Concerns raised by residents
According to reporting by Local Democracy Reporter Ted O’Neill for Bracknell News, local campaigners believe the junction has become more dangerous, with motorists no longer having the same visual cue that encouraged caution.
Residents say the crossroads has long been challenging due to traffic speeds, sightlines and growing traffic volumes. Some now fear conditions have worsened, prompting renewed calls for safety improvements.
The junction currently carries a 40mph limit, and locals have suggested measures including reduced speed limits, improved signage and traffic-calming solutions to prevent further incidents.
Memorial relocation
The war memorial, which commemorates local service personnel, was moved partly to protect it from potential vehicle strikes and to allow greater flexibility for future highway changes.
While many supported preserving the memorial in a safer setting, debate has continued over whether sufficient road safety measures followed its removal.
Campaigners argue the junction redesign has taken too long, leaving what they describe as an interim layout that may confuse drivers unfamiliar with the area.
Calls for further action
Local residents and community representatives are now urging highways authorities to reassess the junction and consider additional safety interventions.
Suggested measures include clearer road markings, speed-reduction trials and a full traffic safety review.
The issue highlights wider concerns across parts of Wokingham borough, where increasing traffic levels on semi-rural roads are placing pressure on infrastructure originally designed for lower volumes of vehicles.
For now, residents say their priority is simple: ensuring the junction becomes safer before more accidents occur.
