Urban Sketchers Reading descended on Wokingham town centre today (Saturday 20th May) armed with sketch pads, paint brushes, easels and a keen eye for what makes the perfect sketch. My Wokingham’s Nick Marr caught up with Sayani Drury who was sketching Wokingham Town Hall.
I asked Sayani who are the Urban Sketchers?
“We are a global movement of people who go out to sketch together. I can tell you about their ethos and we are the Reading Chapter. There are just three of us who work as administrators of the Reading Chapter and are associated with the global movement. Every month we have a meet-up in a local area and sketch for two hours. We don’t necessarily sketch together.
“We allocate two hours to sketch and then meet up for a ‘throw down’ to review each other’s pieces. What you find is that everyone’s work is so diverse and it’s amazing how others have done things from a different perspective. People don’t have to have any qualifications to join, it’s open to all abilities. We tend to paint the same locations but others may choose a different angle and everyone has a unique way of doing things.”
Urban Sketchers Reading meet regularly to sketch around the Reading area including places such as Wokingham, Henley etc.
The Urban Sketchers Manifesto:
1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
3. Our drawings are a record of time and place.
4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
6. We support each other and draw together.
7. We share our drawings online.
8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.
