Five generations celebrate Chas turning 106
A man in Winnersh is one of the oldest people in Berkshire after celebrating his 106th birthday. Albert Ernest Rupert Clegg, known as Charlie, was born on June 10th, 1918, in Woolwich, London – but last week five generations of his family came together to celebrate. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Marines and was on board HMS London at the Spithead Coronation Fleet review in 1937 and later was involved in the transportation of refugees during the Spanish civil war. Charlie married Joan on Boxing Day, 1940 but just weeks later he left for military duties overseas and did not see each other again for three years. During his service he was in Crete and Egypt where he survived various attacks by the Germans before going to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Despite being selected for officer training, he left and worked as an accounts clerk in Portsmouth before joining the Central Electricity Board in 1951 until he retired in 1968. The couple were married for 79 years and had a son, Paul, before Joan passed away at the age of 102, prompting Chas to move in with Paul and his daughter-in-law. His son described him as ‘one of the survival generation’. “Despite a deprived upbringing, he never complained about his lot, never blamed others for the choices he made in life and never felt a sense of entitlement. “He enjoyed a long and happy marriage, always looking out for and supporting Joan. He came through the most difficult of conditions and even survived Covid and pneumonia at the age of 104.” Now living at Abbeyfield Care Home in Winnersh, activities lead Charlotte Richardson said: “He seemed to enjoy his special day. We raised a toast to Chas and he opened cards and presents. Our staff donated to buy his impressive balloon (made by local business Balloon Boutique by Claire Parrish). Chas then had a tea party in our summer house with five
