Every Christmas, the UK generates the equivalent weight of 3.3 million penguins in plastic waste, including unwanted and often non-recyclable baubles.[1] This year, to tackle plastic waste, local house builder David Wilson Homes is helping children at All Saint’s CE Primary School in Wokingham to make sustainable decisions, thanks to a donation of sustainable wooden baubles. The children were invited to draw their own design on the baubles, which were used to decorate the tree at the housebuilder’s show home at Ashridge Grange, on Warren House Road.
The house builder donated 120 wooden baubles to pupils at All Saints from Reception to Year 6 alongside pens and paints, encouraging the children to get creative this Christmas. The activity serves as a timely encouragement for children and families to think about how everyone can take small steps towards protecting the environment, and reduce waste during the gift-giving season. The living Christmas tree at Ashridge Grange was sourced from local nursery, Squires Garden Center, and will be replanted onsite in the new year.
Laura Collinson, Deputy Headteacher at All Saint’s CE Primary School, comments: “The children have had a fantastic afternoon with this festive take on sustainability and decorating their new ornaments. We are very conscious of plastic waste in school and this activity formed the perfect opportunity to communicate the importance of our responsibility to the environment and to combat the idea of waste with the children. It was fantastic to partner with David Wilson Southern Counties for this initiative and see the artistic baubles displayed at Ashridge Grange.”
Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for David Wilson Southern Counties, adds: “Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, having recently launched a fully eco-friendly show home at our local Ashridge Grange development. Everything from the paint to the zero-waste packaging of beauty, wellbeing and cleaning products featured throughout have been specifically included to promote a low-waste and organic lifestyle. We believe that small steps can produce great results, and thank the pupils at All Saint’s CE Primary School for helping us to sustainably decorate the tree at our Sales and Marketing Suite, the perfect finishing touch!”
Alongside promoting eco-friendly measures within its show home, David Wilson Southern Counties has pledged that it will make its developments more sustainable right from the start of the build process, working to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 – the first major house builder to do so, as well as new home designs to be net-zero carbon from 2030.[2]
This Christmas, David Wilson of Southern Counties is expanding the selection of properties available at Ashridge Grange to include one and two-bedroom apartments, and a number of two, three and four-bedroom homes. Prices start from £259,995 for a one-bedroom apartment with a private terrace.
