Local housebuilder David Wilson Homes has partnered with Wescott Infant School, located near its Ashridge Grange development in Wokingham, to promote recycling this autumn. The housebuilder encouraged pupils to collect plastic packaging to fill a ‘Zero Waste Box’, and were rewarded with a bench created from recycled plastic.
It is estimated that UK households produce 2.5 million metric tons of plastic waste per year, but only 40% of it gets recycled, whilst the rest of the products will be thrown out after just one use. To learn about the importance of recycling, the pupils from Wescott Infant School have been busy filling their waste box supplied by TerraCycle with plastic and, once full, the box will be sent away to a recycling facility, which will have allowed pupils to recycle approximately 1907 units of plastic.
This was part of a wider campaign implemented at schools across Home Counties, with a total of 9734 units of waste recycled.
Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for David Wilson Southern Counties, commented,
“We have pledged to become the first housebuilder to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, to building net zero carbon homes by 2030 and to purchasing 100% of our operational energy from renewable sources. With sustainability at our core, we like to work with local communities to encourage green thinking. The pupils from Wescott Infant School have shown great enthusiasm for the recycling campaign, demonstrating how small steps can produce great results.”
Anna Taylor, who manages the Eco Club at Wescott Infant School, added: “The bench donation is an important visual reminder of how small sustainable decisions can benefit us all. The children enjoyed collecting the single use plastic, and enjoyed learning about why it’s so important to divert unnecessary waste from landfill. Our thanks go to David Wilson Southern Counties for helping us to share this important message.”
David Wilson Southern Counties is helping to bring brand new homes to Wokingham, including a selection of one and two-bedroom apartments, and a number of two, three and four-bedroom homes.
