Gritter lorries in Wokingham Borough are diligently tackling the task of gritting the roads tonight in response to the Yellow Weather Warning issued by the Met Office. When snowfall is anticipated, the gritters pre-salt the specified routes outlined in the Borough’s Winter Service Plan, which can be accessed in Volume 4 of our Highway Maintenance Management Plan.
The prioritized order for gritting is as follows:
- Gritting primary routes first
- Followed by secondary routes
- Then addressing less crucial roads
- Additional grit application once snow has fallen

The council operates five gritters, each equipped with a snowplough.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for ice, cautioning that ice and small amounts of snow may result in slippery surfaces in certain areas.
What to Expect:
- Possible icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths
- Potential injuries from slips and falls on icy or snowy surfaces.
1. Driving in Icy Conditions: In icy conditions, delays and hazardous driving conditions may arise. To ensure safety, consider the following steps before embarking on journeys:
- Plan your route
- Check for delays and road closures
- Allow extra time for preparation and check your car thoroughly
- Verify wipers, tires, and screen wash
- Pack essentials in your car (warm clothing, food, drink, blanket, torch)
- Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and carry an in-car charger.
2. Safe Driving on Ice: While it’s safer to avoid driving in icy conditions, if it’s unavoidable, take steps to ensure safety:
- Look ahead for potential hazards and maintain a reduced speed
- Smoothly accelerate, brake, steer, and change gear to minimize skid risk
- Consider using a higher gear for better traction on packed ice.
3. Walking or Cycling: For those walking or cycling, consider the following precautions:
- Plan to leave five minutes earlier to avoid rushing and reduce the risk of accidents
- Opt for pavements along main roads for less slipperiness
- If cycling, stick to treated main roads
- Take extra care on untreated pavements and wear footwear with a good grip.
4. Caring for Elderly Relatives or Neighbors: During icy and cold weather, support elderly relatives or neighbors with these simple measures:
- Check if they need practical assistance and ensure their well-being
- Confirm they have enough food supplies in case they cannot go out
- Offer to clear their paths, using ordinary table or dishwasher salt
- Stay informed about changing weather warnings in your area.
Stay updated with local weather conditions when a weather warning is issued.
