One of Wokingham’s biggest events of the year is taking place on Monday, May 1. The May Fair, organised by Wokingham Lions Club is always eagerly anticipated.
Taking place from the town hall through to Elms Field and with Denmark Street closed to traffic, there will be more than 125 stalls from charities and local trades to crafts and lots of food options. There will be children’s rides, a petting zoo, circus acts and music and dance around the site.
This is the 27th time that the Lions have organised the May Fayre. It is a free event, but donations to support their two chosen charities – Camp Mohawk and Thames Hospice – are greatly appreciated. You can donate online here tinyurl.com/wokylionsdonate or at the Lion’s stall next to the town hall.
The event will be opened at 11am by the Wokingham Town Mayor, Cllr Maria Gee and mini mayor Jayden Hawie from Windmill Primary School. Entertainment will include a Punch & Judy Show, Steppin’ Out Stars of Tomorrow, EBOS (East Berkshire Operatic Society), The Maguire O’Shea Academy of Irish Dance and the No Strings Attached Ukelele Band. As it is May 1, the Berkshire Bedlam Morris Dancers will be dancing and jangling their bells.
Bands include the Jazz Band, Almost Alice (Band) and St. Sebastian Brass Band. There will be The Dance Zone, an energetic dance display, Acoustic Jazz (Toe-tapping Jazz Band) and comedy jugglers. The day will end with The Giant Balloon Show (by Dizzy O’Dare) with a Coronation twist!
